WHAT is your WHY…
and HOW is it expressed?
We all have a WHY. Our WHY is often confused with our WHAT or HOW. Confused? I’ll clear that up for you in a few minutes.
In our Zoom calls on Wednesday and last evening, I talked about my WHY. My WHY is the compelling reason for which I write Today’s Seed, why I have published it five days a week for twenty five years, and why I will continue as long as I am able and have the provision, resources, and health to do so.
It is more than a passion. It is a purpose. But even the purpose is not the WHY. The WHY is the motivation and the compelling reason.
Today’s Scripture passage speaks of things people did that we consider great acts of faith–and they were, of course. Noah, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. We think these things they did were their WHY. They were not.
Truth is, those things were their WHAT. Noah’s WHAT was not building the ark. His WHAT was preserving the people and animals God destined to repopulate the planet. Noah’s HOW was building the ark. So, what was his WHY? I believe his WHY was his relationship with God.
Is this making any more sense now? Maybe? I hope so.
I created a video from the calls that explains my WHY. This is important for you to know because it has much to do with your life. You are part of my WHY. I will not share it now because it would be better for you to hear it in the video. (I will send a link as soon as it is ready.)
My WHAT is the Today’s Seed message you are reading now. The HOW is forms, methods, and media we will use to get it out.
All of us–each person reading this message–should do some serious introspection and understand why they do what they do.
- Are you expected to do certain things?
- Do you do things for pleasure?
- Do you have a compelling purpose or passion?
Or, are you living a “pinball” life… bouncing from one thing to another?
Following God often requires us to do things others do not understand. The entire population of the planet did not understand why Noah built an ark. Abraham’s family, household, and employees did not understand why they were uprooted to… where?
Each did what they did because of a relationship with God. They considered Him faithful and therefore followed His instructions even when they did not make sense to them.
It should be the same with us. Everything we do should be out of relationship with God. If it is not, then I submit that something is out of order.
- Going to work every day should be out of relationship with God.
- Doing the work of ministry should be out of relationship with God.
- Being a good mother, father, child, or friend should be out of relationship with God.
So, what is your WHY and HOW are you going to do your WHAT? Think about it.
Retire the pinball. Make it a goal to understand your WHY. If you ask God, He will reveal it… in time.
Today’s Seed™ Scripture and Prayer for Jan. 27, 2023:
By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith. By faith Abraham, when called to go to a place he would later receive as his inheritance, obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going. By faith he made his home in the promised land like a stranger in a foreign country; he lived in tents, as did Isaac and Jacob, who were heirs with him of the same promise. By faith Abraham, even though he was past age–and Sarah herself was barren–was enabled to become a father because he considered him faithful who had made the promise. (Heb 11:7-9,11 NIV)
Prayer: LORD, faith requires me to do things others may not understand. I am not doing those things for them to understand. I do them because of my relationship with You. Give me courage to do what I must regardless of what anyone else thinks or says about it. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
